The Cardinal Virtues are considered to be the four pillars of Stoicism and according to the Stoics, their understanding and embodiment is essential to living a meaningful and happy life. Acting virtuously is always the goal, and everything else that is important naturally falls into place.

The Cardinal Virtues of Stoicism are Wisdom, Courage, Justice and Temperance. No virtue is more important than the other, and many Stoics believed that to represent one is to represent them all as they are all so closely interlinked and interdependent.

THE VIEW FROM ABOVE COIN

The “View From Above” in Stoicism is a profound practice that the Stoic Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his Meditations set the foundations for.

Each of us as individuals have extremely limited views of the whole. As a result, we can easily get swept away by personal problems, situations, frustrations and confusion that seem like the world depends on it from our point of view.

Just as astronauts going to space looking back on Earth profoundly changes them as people, so practicing "The View From Above" can have a similar effect for you. It is a reminder to "Zoom Out" and see the bigger picture. It is to get the true perspective on the problems that seem to weigh so heavily on our day-to-day lives.

THE INNER CITADEL COIN

The journey within, the retreat inside, introspection, the path home, self-enquiry and the soul are just some of the terms that refer to the same inward journey that the Stoics referred to as the Inner Citadel.

The Stoics, sages and the wisest people to have ever lived realised that everything takes place inside of us. Anger, jealousy, misery, frustration, joy, peace. It all happens inside. Our opinions about the outside world happen inside of us. Even an irritating noise is only “irritating” inside of us. Without our inner irritation, it is just a noise. The inner sanctuary is all we really have and it goes wherever we go.

This is why the Stoics – most notably Marcus Aurelius – saw how important it was to cultivate, manage, explore and fortify the Inner Citadel that lies within all of us. The Inner Citadel in Stoicism simply being that place inside of us where there is peace and contentment, regardless of what is happening “outside of the walls”.
