It is a reminder that you will be faced with many decisions today, so are you going to choose the ones that make the world a bit brighter or make it a bit darker?

SUMMUM BONUM STOIC CHALLENGE COIN

Summum Bonum” translates from Latin as “Highest Good”. Ancient philosophers in Greece and other parts of the world, as they are still today, were interested in what constitutes a good person and what is “Good” itself.

From Plato and Aristotle to Cicero and the early Stoics, there were many ideas about what is meant by “Good”. Various ideas were put forward but the general consensus was that a good act or deed must be good in itself, regardless of outcome.

Marcus Aurelius wrote of how we should do the right thing, whether it’s cold or warm, whether we’re tired or well-rested, whether we’re despised or honoured for it. In any given situation, we almost always know what the right action is to take, even if that action is no-action. What is difficult is having the courage to do so. What is difficult is ignoring our fears and ego and anxiety and doing what we know to be right - what we know to be the “Highest Good” in any given situation.

Summum Bonum and the symbolism on this coin is designed to keep you acting in what you know to be the right way, day-by-day…

THIS SPECIFIC COIN - FRONT + BACK

Front of the coin: A minimalistic design that displays the essential message of ‘Summum Bonum’ - The Highest Good.

The image of the rose is tied very closely to the concept of Summum Bonum, most notably from Robert Fludd’s piece from 1629. The thorns of the stem and the sharp leaves represent the challenges of acting in accordance with ‘Good’. The flowering rose represents the fruits of acting in accordance with the ‘Summum Bonum’.

Back of the coin: ‘Do what is right, not what is easy.” The message on the back of the coin echoes the symbolism on the front. Although what is right and what is easy sometimes coincide, this is rarely the case. The shining sun is another representation of ‘The Highest Good’.
